Travel and Accommodations

Hawaii Island, or “The Big Island,” has two airports in Kona (KOA) and Hilo (ITO). Hilo is the closer airport and is about 45 minutes away. Travel time from Kona to Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park is approximately 2 1/2 hours. It is recommended to rent a car, but there is public bus service from Hilo Airport to the Park.

We will provide limited shuttle service from the Hilo Airport to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on June 3.

Accommodations in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park are limited to the more expensive Volcano House and the more affordable and convenient Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) where we will be holding our meeting. KMC is a five-minute walk to the Crater. The Volcano House sits on the Crater’s rim and is about 1.2 miles from where we will be holding our meeting. The walk is relatively flat, but open to the elements and moves through sulfur vents. Information on The Volcano House can be found at: https://hawaiivolcanohouse.com/.

We will be meeting on the grounds of Kilauea Military Camp (KMC), which is a recreational facility for active and non-active military personnel. KMC is within Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. We have reserved cabins/cottages for the group, but there are other options as you can find on the link below. Typically, these cabins have fireplaces, kitchens, small living rooms, and dining spaces. On the grounds is a restaurant, bar, general store, bowling alley, tennis courts, basketball courts, and so on. All non-military guests must be sponsored at check-in. We will arrange sponsors for you. For those connected with the Department of Defense please note your lodging rate will be less expensive depending on KMC requirements.

Please note that Park entrance fees apply daily but multi-day passes are available if you do not already possess a yearly or lifetime National Park Pass.
